Water Distribution Systems Operator (Grade II or Eligible)

Hawaiian Beaches Water Company is a small, family-owned public water utility serving approximately 1,400 service connections in a growing subdivision on Hawaii Island. For over 20 years, the Prescott family has operated the system with a hands-on, community-first approach. We are not a large government utility; we are a private company responsible for delivering safe, reliable drinking water to our neighbors every day.

This is a full-spectrum operations role in a small utility. You will be involved in everything from meter reading and sampling to water main repairs, service installations, and system troubleshooting. This role is ideal for a certified Grade II Distribution Systems Operator (or higher), or an experienced plumber/pipefitter capable of obtaining certification within one year. Operators share on-call responsibilities, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain water production, treatment, and distribution systems
• Troubleshoot pumps, motors, valves, and underground mains
• Install and repair service laterals, meters, and meter boxes
• Conduct chlorine and water quality sampling and documentation
• Perform leak detection and emergency mainline repairs
• Maintain O&M logs and regulatory documentation
• Use handheld meter reading devices
• Communicate professionally with customers regarding service issues
• Lead and direct field staff when required
• Maintain safe traffic control zones and confined space protocols

Qualifications

• Grade II Distribution Systems Operator (State of Hawaii) or the ability to obtain within 12 months
• Minimum 1 year of water distribution, plumbing, or pipefitting experience
• Valid Hawaii driver's license (clean record, insurable)
• Ability to lift up to 100 lbs
• Mechanical aptitude (pumps, motors, electrical basics)
• Basic computer skills
• Strong initiative, this is not a "babysitting" environment

• Pay: $20 to $28 per hour, based on experience
